history

The station was opened on January 1, 1904 as part of the construction of the route extension Homburg (Saar) - Rohrbach (Saar) of the Palatinate Ludwig Railway. This section became the main traffic artery on the Mannheim - Saarbrücken axis instead of the original Homburg - Neunkirchen section . The other routes around Homburg lost their importance. The Kirkel train station was of greatest importance at this time.

On March 12 and 13, 1945, Kirkel was attacked by US fighter bombers. In addition to the ammunition depot in the forest between Kirkel and Rohrbach, the railway line and the train station were also among the main targets.

Until 1973 the station had a low central platform (approx. 30 cm above the top of the rails ), which was located between the two through tracks . It was reached via a crossing leading over the Homburg direction track, which was released and blocked by the dispatcher. With the increase in traffic and throughput speeds and in anticipation of the imminent relocation of the dispatcher's workstation to Saarbrücken, a passenger tunnel was built in 1973 from the south side (town center). At the same time, the platform was raised to 76 cm above the top of the rail. In 2008, the underpass was extended to the north side, where Park & Ride parking spaces have also been located on the site of the former siding since 2008 (see below).

The track diagram interlocking of the type Dr L2 was located in the station building and, in addition to the two through tracks, also controlled the siding of the station as well as the two shunting tracks with loading ramp north and south of the line. It was taken in 1956 in operation and out of since September 1, 1972 operation control center remotely Saarbrücken. The occupation was retained by a dispatcher on site who implemented the control commands transmitted from the operations control center. On September 1, 1982, the signal box on site was no longer manned, the control was now completely from Saarbrücken. When the ESTW Saarbrücken went into operation in October 1998, the signal box was taken out of service; Since November 2003, the competent local dispatcher sitting in the operations center in Karlsruhe. With the decommissioning of the signal box and conversion to ESTW control, the station was also dismantled to the stop. Until the beginning of the 1970s, the on-site dispatcher was also responsible for ticket sales.

Part of the old goods handling hall has been used by a classic car association since 1999.

The new Park & Ride car park was inaugurated in May 2008. To increase the speed to 200 km / h, the superstructure and substructure of the route of the Palatinate Ludwig Railway were completely renovated. At the same time, the platform tunnel was extended to the northern side of the station in order to create direct access to the Kirkel educational center of the Saarland Chamber of Labor and the newly established Park & Ride car park there. The entire platform was renewed and noise barriers were built to the side of the railroad tracks. The work was completed in 2008 and 2009 with the renewal of the platform access. The old walls were torn down and replaced with a glazed staircase.
