The Merzig (Saar) station is a station on the Saar Railway between Saarbruecken and Trier . Its reception building is a listed building.

overview

Until December 5, 2016, barrier-free access was only possible on platform 1 ; since then, after a new construction of the central platform, lifts have been installed on this platform and on the main platform, so that all platforms are now barrier-free.

The museum railway to Losheim begins in Merzig . Before the Second World War, a railway branched off in Merzig via Mechern and Mondorf to Bettelainville in France . After the bridge over the Saar was blown up in the Second World War, however, it was no longer passable. After the Saar was expanded, the piers were the last remnants of this bridge to be dismantled. In addition to three platform tracks and a few freight / stabling tracks, Merzig station has a tank loading ramp.

Reception building

Entrance building of the Merzig train station

While the work on the Saar line from Saarbrücken to Merzig was still in progress, considerations were made about the construction of the Merzig reception building . The construction time can be determined very precisely, since a copy of the original construction drawing was made in 1884, which has been preserved. This execution drawing with floor plans, sections and views was dated April 1858 and had the signature of the departmental builder Lieber. The construction of the building must have started shortly after this date.

The building is listed as an individual monument on the city's list of monuments.

environment

The city's bus station and a taxi rank are in front of the station building .

2004 railway accident

On the night of October 24th to 25th, 2004 at around 12:10 am, the ore train TKC 47797 ( Rotterdam - Dillingen ) derailed at Merzig station. 16 cars derailed and overturned. The other wagons and the locomotives ( BR 151 091 and BR 151 095) were not damaged, and no people were injured in the incident. The cause was apparently a broken axle on one of the wagons. According to the DB AG, the total damage amounted to 2 to 4 million euros.
