Location of Mechern in Saarland

Mechern is a district of the city of Merzig in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ) with around 850 inhabitants.

history

Today's church stands over the foundations of an important Gallo-Roman villa, from which mosaics and wall paintings have been preserved (the finds are distributed among the museums in Trier and Saarbrücken). The place name can also be derived from the Roman ruins - maceria = wall (see: Grevenmacher, Auersmacher etc.).

In 1220 Mechern was first mentioned as Macheren in the list of properties of the Trier Abbey of St. Maximin.

In 1430 the Lords of Esch were enfeoffed with Fremersdorf and Mechern by the Counts of Saarbrücken.

The Saarbrücken counts left the place to the Duchy of Lorraine in 1581. Mechern fell to France in 1661, where it remained until the Congress of Vienna.

From 1911 to 1917 the Merzig – Bettelainville railway line with the valley bridge near Mechern was built.

On January 1, 1974, Mechern was incorporated into the district town of Merzig as part of the regional reform.
