Schwemlingen is one of 17 districts of the city of Merzig in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ).
history
Schwemlingen was already settled in the Stone Age, as the discovery of an 18 cm long flint knife from this time shows. It was first mentioned in a document on the occasion of a donation in 1150 on a parchment roll from the Mettlach monastery.
Due to industrialization, Schwemlingen has transformed from a rural farming village into a workers' village during the First World War . After the Second World War , this expanded even further, the original city center was reinforced to the west and south by new residential areas. The eastern part of the village has remained the core with the commercial part of the village to this day.
On the occasion of the Saarland community reform, the previously independent community Schwemlingen was incorporated into the district town of Merzig on January 1, 1974.
