Silwingen is one of 17 districts of the district town of Merzig in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ). Until the end of 1973 Silwingen was an independent municipality.
history
Silwingen is one of the oldest settlements in the region, which is suggested by grave finds from the La Tène period and a burial mound in the Büdingerwald.
Further evidence is the remains of a Roman villa that were found during the construction of the Merzig – Bettelainville railway in 1910. The fact that the Romans were extremely active in the region is known for sure since the many finds during the construction of the motorway towards Luxembourg . This is shown by the buildings of the recently rebuilt Roman Villa Perl-Borg .
The first documentary mention comes from the year 1030, when the Margravine Jutta von Lorraine gave the Abbey of St. Matthias in Trier "Mamonis Villa" ( Mondorf ) and some surrounding villages. In this document the village was named "Selvingen", in later documents the spellings "Seluingen", "Selewingin" and "Selewiggin" appear.
In 1778 the place had 15 inhabitants and paid tithes jointly to the Count von der Leyen and to the St. Mathias Abbey in Mondorff .
As part of the Saarland regional and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality of Silwingen was assigned to the city of Merzig on January 1, 1974.
