Location of Harlingen in Saarland

Harlingen is one of 17 districts districts of the district town of Merzig in the Merzig-Wadern district ( Saarland ) with almost 600 inhabitants. Together with the districts of Bietzen and Menningen, Harlingen forms the Bietzerberg .

history

The discovery of a Franconian warrior's grave and the tracing of the name Harlingen back to the Germanic personal name Harold suggests that Harlingen originated around 500-550 AD.

In 1153 Harlingen was mentioned for the first time under the name "Harledingen" in the annals of the Augustinian Abbey Springiersbach . The place was mentioned later in the years 1182 (Harldingen), 1197 (Harldenge), 1210 (Harledengis), 1250 (Harledingin) and 1459 (Harlingen).

Near Harlingen, on the Panoramaweg between Harlingen and Merzig, there was a settlement called Wolkesingen, which was probably abandoned before 1498. The name has survived as a field name "Volkesen".

There are two wisdoms from Harlingen, which date from 1559 and 1577, and which are in the Federal Archives in Koblenz. A fair on August 15, the patronage festival of the Marienkapelle, was already mentioned.

At the end of the Thirty Years War , the entire Bietzerberg (Harlingen, Bietzen, Menningen) only had seven inhabitants. The following period was shaped by the borderland location and the special nature of the joint administration by the Electorate of Trier and the Duchy of Lorraine . After Lorraine fell to France in 1766, the border between Kurtrier and France was redefined in 1778; the Bietzerberg with Harlingen fell to Kurtrier.

From 1795 to 1814 Harlingen was part of the French Republic and the Napoleonic Empire. It was subordinate to the Saar Department , Canton Merzig. In 1815 Harlingen came to the Kingdom of Prussia . In 1920 it came to the Saar area . During the Second World War, the "Westwall" also ran through the Harlingen district. Numerous bunker remains from this time. There was also an air station on the "Hohen Berg" during the Second World War.

After the Second World War, Harlingen became part of the French occupation zone and Saarland, which was independent until 1957 .

On January 1, 1974, Harlingen became a district of the district town of Merzig due to the municipal reorganization in Saarland .
