The Marienkapelle ( Beatae Mariae Virginis ) is a Roman Catholic chapel in Harlingen , a district of Merzig , district of Merzig-Wadern , Saarland . It is a branch church of St. Martin in Bietzen and is consecrated to Mary , the mother of Jesus. In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the building is a single monument listed.

history

The first documentary mention of a church in Harlingen dates from 1519.

The current chapel was built in 1727 in the Baroque style. From 1945 the chapel was rebuilt. The valuable were Rococo - stucco destroyed. In 1969 the outside area was converted.

Pilgrimages to the chapel have been taking place since the 18th century . The day of pilgrimage is August 15th every year.

Furnishing

The chapel's furnishings include a miraculous image above the high altar , which was created around 1430. The seated Mother of God is shown with the divine child in her arms and a scepter in her hand. The halo and flanking angel were not added until 1926. The high altar on which the miraculous image is located is made of wood and dates from the 18th century.

In front of the high altar is a communion bench from the 18th century with carved panels, which was redesigned in 1957 by the artist Schilling.

In the cove corners of the side walls there are figures of the four evangelists from 1990 to 1991. In a seated position are shown: St. Mark with a lion, book and quill, St. John with an eagle, book and quill, on the right side St. Luke with Taurus, book and quill and St. Matthew with the Son of Man, book and quill. Other figures are St. Mary of Victory and St. Joseph .

Painter and sculptor Ernst Alt ( Saarbrücken ) created 14 modern stations of the cross between 2000 and 2002.
