Early history
The earliest mention of Merzig is, according to Kell, in an order from the Western Roman Emperor Valentinians , issued during his stay in "Mansio praedium Martiaticum" on June 4, 369. At the exit of the Merchinger Valley in the Hangenfeld district, the Roman settlement is believed to be in the area of the Confluence of the Ritzerbach in the Seffersbach various Roman finds were made.
middle Ages
Charles the Bald gave the Merzig Crown Estate to Archbishop Bertolf of Trier on the occasion of his episcopal ordination in 869. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the ministerial dynasty of Merzig served the elector. The Archbishop of Trier had bailiwick rights in Merzig. Merzig was divided into seven bailiwicks , "the bailiwick" of the archbishop, the combined "Schultheißerei" with the "Montclairer Vogtei", the "Rischerei", the "Mettlacher Vogtei", the "Brückerei" and the "Propstei".
On the Merziger district exists Wüstung Wolkessen or cloud singing, mentioned in 1337 in the records of the Abbey Mettlach . In the 11th century Merzig became the capital of the eponymous country chapter to which 45 parishes belonged. From the 11th century on, Merzig came under the tension of the expanding powers Kurtrier and Lorraine . In 1333 Trier and the powerful elector Balduin were able to exercise their rights and rights in the court of men “zu den Bäumelen” against Duke Rudolf of Lorraine . a. enforce via Merzig. After the rulers of Lorraine had gained strength, a stalemate arose, and from 1368 Merzig was jointly administered with the district of Merzig-Saargau by Kurtrier and Lorraine.
Modern times
This condominium existed for about 400 years until 1778, from 1766 together with France , the legal successor of Lorraine. After the condominium was divided, Merzig came to Kurtrier until 1794, but was soon occupied by the French revolutionary troops. After the end of the French occupation, the new Prussian Rhine province came into being in 1815 . It was not until May 25, 1857 that the city of Merzig was expressly recognized by the Prussian king.

Streets
Merzig is well connected to the national and international road network via the federal autobahn 8 ( Perl - Salzburg ) and the federal road 51 ( Bremen - Saargemünd ).
railroad
Merzig is located on the Saar line and has three train stations, two of them in Merzig ( Merzig (Saar) , Merzig-Stadtmitte) and one in the Merzig district of Besseringen. The first is a train station with an attached bus station, but a bit outside the city center. All Deutsche Bahn RE and RB trains stop here. There is a connection to Saarbrücken, Homburg and Trier every half hour . There is also the “Merzig-Stadtmitte” train stop, which has been in operation since 2000 and is located directly in the city center. Just like in Besseringen, only regional trains stop here .
The Fremersdorf stop is also in the area of the city of Merzig, but is named after the district of the municipality of Rehlingen-Siersburg .
The Merzig Süd – Büschfeld railway branches off from the Saar line at Merzig-Süd . After the closure, there has been a museum railway operation on part of the route since 1982 and freight traffic again since 2007.
economy
Economically, the district town of Merzig supplies a catchment area of more than 80,000 people, whereby the visitors who come to Merzig to shop or to use the extensive range of services regularly include guests from neighboring France and Luxembourg. The city of Merzig is the location of traditional companies in the field of ceramics, metal processing and the beverage industry, but recently it has also been able to record significant successes in the field of pharmaceutical and medical technology trade. Some parts of the city are largely shaped by agriculture and the many tree nurseries that have made Merzig the tree nursery center of the southwest.
Merzig offers its citizens and commuters from the surrounding area over 12,000 jobs. For years, the most important area of employment has been the service sector, in which 63 percent of all residents of Merzig work, including trade and transport with around 21 percent of jobs. It is followed by manufacturing with 35 percent and agriculture with just under 2 percent.

Merzig is an important production and logistics location of the porcelain and ceramics manufacturer Villeroy & Boch , which is based in neighboring Mettlach, and its former subsidiary V&B Fliesen GmbH, which has been part of the Turkish Eczacıbaşı Holding since 2007 . In spring 2007, a historic vineyard was replanted on the Kreuzberg. The wine falls under the name "Saarländischer Landwein".

Hospitals
Until the 1990s, Merzig was one of the three locations for psychiatric institutions in Saarland. The institution, founded in 1876 under the name of Merzig Provincial Insane Asylum , was the largest in Saarland , along with the psychiatric institution in Homburg . Partly under the code name - in late summer 1939, the institution with Merziger involved in was Operation T4 operating under the name - Nazi euthanasia programs to mentally handicapped. In the course of a move declared as evacuation, the institution was closed and the between 600 and 900 patients were moved to other institutions. Most of them were murdered in the Hadamar killing center in Hessen , one of the T4 centers.
The historian Christoph Braß, who specializes in the subject, rates the extent to which the two Saarland institutions Homburg and Merzig had contributed to the euthanasia program as above average: While more than half of the psychiatric inmates from other federal states had survived the euthanasia program only a quarter of the Saarland patients came back. Doctors involved in the T4 program also continued their careers in the institutions in Saarland after the war - such as the doctor Rudolf Leppien, who acted as assistant to the T4 expert Hanns Heene in Homburg and continued to hold responsible positions in the institution in Merzig after the war exercised. After 1945 the facility operated under the name Landesnervenklinik Merzig . In 1998 it became part of the Saarländische Heilstätten Gesellschaft (SAG) and dissolved in the course of the decentralization of psychiatric institutions. As a correctional facility, the building complex now houses a closed facility for forensic psychiatry - the Saarland Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry (SKFP).
