The Seffersbach Bridge

The Seffersbachbrücke is a road bridge in Merzig , on which Trierer Straße crosses the Seffersbach. It stands as a last remaining Hängegurtbrücke after system Möller in Saarland under monument protection and is an important example of early Bauversuche with reinforced concrete .

Building history

The bridge was built in 1901 according to the system patented in 1894 by the Braunschweig civil engineer Max Möller by the construction company Drenckhahn & Sudhop , which was also based in Braunschweig and was involved in the development of the bridge construction system. In 1936 it was widened and a walkway was added on the west side. This obscured the original decorations on the bridge on this side. In the course of the general renovation and dismantling, these ornaments were made visible again on both sides of the bridge. There are stylized egg bars on the outer hanging straps and volutes on the supports . These neo-baroque decorative elements were made from cement stucco .
