Johann Heinrich Kell (born February 22, 1880 in Düppenweiler ; † October 14, 1961 in Merzig ) was a German educator and local researcher . The focus of his work was in the district town of Merzig on the lower Saar.

Life

Kell was born the son of a miner in Düppenweiler, where he also attended elementary school. He was then trained as a primary school teacher at the preparandy and the Wittlich teacher training college. In 1901 his career began as a teacher in Hülzweiler , then Hüttersdorf and Schwalbach . In 1912 he passed the rector's examination and was headmaster in Sulzbach / Saar from 1913 to 1920 . In 1920 he came to Merzig, where he headed the school supervisory district as a school councilor for 25 years. From 1945 until his retirement on 31 January 1948 he worked as a teacher at the girls' high school in Merzig.

Kell was a founding member of the "Verein für Heimatkunde" in 1925, which he chaired for almost three decades. He headed the association from 1926 to May 1954, succeeding Eugen Baltes and Wilhelm Schaefer, who were both in office for only a few months. Lectures with historical, geographical, archaeological and economic policy content were held under his leadership. The first five yearbooks of the Heimatverein were created under his leadership and were also edited by him. His homeland books The History of the District of Merzig (1925) and The History of the City of Merzig and the Merziger Land (1958) are still among the standard works on the city and the district. He also initiated the establishment of a district home museum, but was only realized with Fellenberg Castle more than 20 years after his death .

On March 5, 1959, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st Class, for his services as a local researcher . The city of Merzig honored Kell in 2014 by officially renaming the space between the club house and the city library in Merzig to Johann-Heinrich-Kell-Platz. This was preceded by the renovation and redesign of the square and St. Peter's Church Square for 1.9 million euros.
