Mertzig ( Luxembourgish Mäerzeg ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and belongs to the canton of Diekirch . The municipality, to which only the village of Mertzig belongs, lies on the border between Ösling and Gutland .

geography

Mertzig is the westernmost municipality in the canton of Diekirch . It borders in the north on the municipality of Esch-Sauer , in the northeast on Feulen , in the southeast on Ettelbrück and Colmar-Berg , in the south on Vichten and in the west on Grosbous .

The village lies in the valley of the River Wark , which flows through the village from southwest to northeast. In the maps of Joseph Johann von Ferraris , Ober- and Untermertzig are listed as separate localities. Obermertzig on the right and Untermertzig on the left side of the Wark.

history

Mertzig is mentioned by name for the first time in 762 as Marciaco. Other names are Martiaco, 842, and Mertzzich, 1476. Thus Mertzig is probably older than Feulen and one of the oldest villages in the country.

In the fireplace census of 1526, Mertzig is mentioned under the rule of Esch-Sauer . Overmertzich 7 mesnaiges, Niedermertzich 7 1/2 mesnaiges . Feulen has 25 mesnaiges (fireplaces) at this count . 1611 was counted again where names are mentioned.
