history
The area around Erpeldingen was already inhabited in Gallo-Roman times. Like many villages whose name ends in "-ingen", Erpeldingen was founded between the 6th and 9th centuries when Franks settled in this area.
Erpeldingen appears for the first time in writing in an act from 1247 in which the knights Frédéric and Gérard von Erpeldange are mentioned. In the 12th century the castle was built as a moated castle . After changing hands several times, it was bought by the Luxembourg state in 1983. Today the municipal administration is housed in the building.
The municipality of Erpeldingen
After the French Revolution , when Luxembourg became part of the French Forêts department , a new civil organization emerged. Among other things, the municipalities were introduced in 1795 and Erpeldange was incorporated into the section of the municipality of Diekirch . In 1823 the municipality boundaries were revised and Erpeldange became part of the municipality Ettelbrück together with Ingeldorf .
At the request of the population and through a law of January 22, 1850, Erpeldingen became an independent municipality, which consisted of the localities Erpeldingen and Ingeldorf. Bürden was added to the municipality in 1906 as the third village.
On January 1st, 2015 the community was renamed "Erpeldingen an der Sauer".
