history

A church in Hilhaben, which bore the patronage of St. Peter in chains , was mentioned as early as 1589. In 1709 a new church was built, which was extended in 1746 to have a cruciform floor plan .

Due to a lack of space and a dilapidated tower , the new building of the church was planned in 1869, but due to the restless conditions during the Kulturkampf there were considerable delays in the planning of the church. In December 1884 the church was temporarily closed due to the risk of collapse. In 1885 the church council applied for a new church to be built. The plans , for which the architect Wilhelm Hector ( Saarbrücken-St.Johann ) was responsible, were approved in June 1887 by the Vicariate General of the Diocese of Trier with some corrections.

When the old church was torn down, a seal of the auxiliary bishop Hermannus von Apelfeldern from Lihula , who was in Trier around 1230 , was found in the high altar . The construction of the new building took place in the years 1890 to 1891. After completion of the construction work, the Trier bishop Michael Felix Korum took the consecration on May 9, 1893 .

In 1960-1965 and 1984 the church underwent restoration work.

Architecture and equipment

The church building was a three-aisled basilica in the style of Gothic Revival built and divided into the tower with spire , the nave and the five-sided polygonal final chorus .

The first painting of the church, which was created by the church painters Heinrich and Ernst Klein (Merzig) around 1900, was painted over in the 1960s, but exposed again in 1984 as part of a restoration. The lead glass windows of the church, which show pictures from the history of salvation , were designed in 1963 by the glass painter Jakob Schwarzkopf and manufactured by the Binsfeld company ( Trier ). The original glazing was destroyed in World War II.
