Woermann & Brock , today mostly just Woermann Brock ( WB for short ), officially Woermann Brock & Co (Swakopmund) (Pty) Ltd or Woermann Brock Company (Pty) Ltd , is one of the largest and oldest trading companies in Namibia . It was founded in 1894 .

history

The company was founded on October 1, 1894 as Damara & Namaqua Handelsgesellschaft mbH in Hamburg . The parent company was the Hamburg company C. Woermann . The aim was to intensify trade between Hamburg and what was then the protected area of German South West Africa . The in-house Woermann line was used for this .

By the beginning of the First World War , 32 shops were built in what is now Namibia. These included the main offices in Swakopmund ( Woermannhaus ) and Lüderitz ( Woermannhaus ). At this time, the trading company also built the Damoorm and the Deutsche Afrika-Bank in the Deutsche-Afrika-Bank building .

In 1909 the company was Woermann Brock & Co. renamed. The owners were Adolph and Eduard Woermann , Max Brock and Arnold Amsinck . Eduard Wardesky continued to be the managing director of the company with its headquarters in Swakopmund.

With the outbreak of World War I on August 1, 1914, the company ceased all operations outside of Swakopmund and Windhoek. The parent company in Hamburg was no longer able to run the company. After Eduard Wardesky had headed the company for 30 years, Wilhelm Brock took over the management after his death in 1929.

During the Second World War , the Allies took control of the company. This led to a de facto collapse of business activities. After the war, Wilhelm Brock in Swakopmund and Willem Engberts in Windhoek took over the business. With the support of Ascan Woermann , Wilhelm Brock, Emil Heinrichsen , Willem Engberts and Erich Woermann, Woermann, Brock & Co. was separated from the Hamburg parent company.

In 1966, a new supermarket was opened in the self-built August-Schmerenbeck-Haus on today's Independence Avenue in Windhoek . Under the leadership of Konrad Woermann , supermarkets were built in Klein Windhoek , Windhoek-Katutura and Windhoek-Olympia until the early 1990s .

In 1998 Konrad's sons Jesko and Ingo took over the management. Konrad retired from the company in 2001 for health reasons.

Since the late 1990s, more stores have opened across the country.

Corporate structure

The company consists of two independent branches, which are divided between Jesko and Ingo Woermann.

The total of more than 40 (as of September 2016) Woermann Supermarkets , Woermann Cash & Carry and Woermann Hyper are located in numerous locations in Namibia, including Windhoek Gobabis , Grootfontein , Katima Mulilo , Keetmanshoop , Mariental , Maltahöhe , Ongwediva , Ondangwa , Oshakati , Rehoboth and Tsumeb . They are managed by Jesko Woermann with headquarters in Windhoek . His brother Ingo runs the seven shops on the Namibian coast in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay . These are called woermannbrock . The head office is in Swakopmund .
