Ongwediva is a city with around 20,000 inhabitants in the Oshana region (one of the " Four O regions "), together with Oshakati and Ondangwa, the second largest urban agglomeration in Namibia (after Windhoek ). The city is about six kilometers east of Oshakati on the B1 national road . The constituency of the same name, Ongwediva, has a population of 27,000. The population is growing by 3.5 percent per year.
The third largest trade fair in Namibia takes place every year in Ongwediva with the Ongwediva trade fair.
The city has a state hospital, the Ongwediva Medipark, 13 state and two private schools, secondary educational institutions as well as various hotels, inns and three shopping centers. There are also seven churches. Ongwediva is home to one of the 12 campuses of the University of Namibia, the José Eduardo dos Santos Campus.
Ongwediva will be the seat of the new Oshakati diocese from Christmas 2019 [out of date] .
climate
Ongwediva has a semi-arid climate (steppe climate BSh, according to the Köppen and Geiger climate classification ), with hot summers and relatively mild winters (warm days and cold nights). The average annual rainfall is about 470 millimeters; the main precipitation falls in the southern summer.
history
Ongwediva was created during the Namibian struggle for independence and was founded by the South African armed forces in the 1960s . The city directly adjacent to Oshakati has been developing into an important urban center in the north of the country since independence.
