Local elections in Namibia 2020

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The local elections in Namibia 2020 are to take place on November 27, 2020, parallel to the regional council elections.

These are to be the first elections since 2014 to take place with ballot papers instead of the voting machines used in previous years . The background to this is a supreme court decision on the use of voting machines, which may no longer be used for verification without a paper printout. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic in Namibia , the electoral commission does not want to spend the approximately 133 million Namibian dollars required for equipment .

Voter registration for new voters and changed voters should take place from September 7th to 15th, 2020.

Starting position

A total of 377 seats

The SWAPO went as the big winner of the local elections in 2015 produced. It was able to gain 16 local administrations compared to the 2010 elections (38 in total) and now has a majority in 54 of the 57 local administrations. Only Okakarara and Otjinene were led by other parties. In Aroab there was no majority for any party.

The SWAPO achieved a total of 280 seats in local administrations and thus 54 more than in 2010. The DTA (today PDM) came to 41, UDF to 22, NUDO to 11, RDP to 11, APP to 4, citizen associations also to 4, UPM to 3 and COD on one seat. The turnout was only 39.8 percent.

Due to resignations or deaths of local representatives, various by-elections were held in 2019 and on January 15, 2020. The turnout in the electoral districts was between 8.2 and 30.8 percent. Further by-elections are planned for March [obsolete] .
