Okakarara is a town in the constituency of the same name in the Otjozondjupa region in Namibia and has 3700 inhabitants. It is located a few kilometers southeast of the Waterberg Park in the former homeland Hereroland and is still a center of the Herero today .

economy

Since 2007, a trade fair with a focus on agriculture and technology has been held in Okakarara every year in September, as well as a meeting point for breeders. This initiative also led to the establishment of a trade center (for SMEs ) and a cultural center (financed with German support). The municipality also has a secondary school, a state hospital and a vocational training center.

In the field of development aid, the steps for children foundation has been active with growing institutions since 2006 .

Commemorations

On August 14, 2004 the commemorations for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Waterberg took place in Okakarara ; The then German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul spoke for the first time of the moral guilt of German troops in connection with the suppression of the Herero and Nama uprising by the German colonial power.
