Local elections in Namibia 2015

The local elections in Namibia 2015 took place on November 27, 2015 in parallel with the regional council elections. A special election day for police officers, election workers and people at sea was held on November 23, 2015.

November 27th was declared an official holiday by President Hage Geingob on November 24th .

Voter registration

Voter registration took place between January 15 and March 2, 2014. Almost 3,000 mobile and stationary registration offices were available for this purpose. After some complaints, the electoral roll was drawn up by mid-June 2014. A subsequent registration took place in September 2014. A total of 1,241,194 voters were allowed. Proof of residency in a particular municipality for at least 12 months is required for registration.

Election result

More than a month before the elections, on October 20, 2015, five of the 52 local governments had already chosen the winners as there were no opponents.

The SWAPO emerged as the big winner of the elections. It was able to gain 16 local administrations compared to the 2010 elections (38 in total) and is now the majority in 54 of the 57 local administrations. Only Okakarara and Otjinene will be led by other parties until 2020. In Aroab there was no majority for any party.

SWAPO achieved a total of 280 seats in local administrations, 54 more than five years ago. The DTA came to 41, UDF to 22, NUDO to 11, RDP to 11, APP to 4, civic associations also to 4, UPM to 3 and COD to one seat.

The turnout was 39.8 percent.
