Holidays in Namibia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an overview of the national holidays in Namibia .

These are set out in the "Public Holidays Act 26" of 1990 and the "Public Holidays Amendment Act 16, 2004". Among other things, it also stipulates that if a public holiday falls on a Sunday , the following Monday is a public holiday. In addition, additional public holidays can be set for one year by the President. So far, this has been the case with every parliamentary and presidential election .

September 28th has a special position. This " Day of the Namibian Child " was announced by public notice, but is not a public holiday. In 2004, Human Rights Day was renamed “Namibian Women's Day and International Human Rights Day”.

May 28 (as of May 2017), in memory of the closure of all concentration camps in German South West Africa in 1908, is to be a national holiday as the "Genocide Day". Such an unofficial holiday was celebrated for the first time on May 30, 2017. In February 2020, the introduction as a public holiday was decided in principle.
