The Heroes Day ( English Heroes Day ) is one of a total national twelve holidays in Namibia . The holidays are set out in the Public Holidays Act 26 of 1990. Heroes' day takes place on August 26th of the year.

Political background

The holiday dates back to 1966, when the South West African people's organization SWAPO first formed for the armed struggle against the mandate power of South Africa . The mandate had already been withdrawn from the South African government by the UN in the same year, but this decision did not succeed. The PLAN (People's Liberation Army of Namibia), an armed wing of SWAPO, then launched military attacks against South Africa , starting from camp bases in Angola . The reaction took place on August 26, 1966, when South African pilots bombed a SWAPO camp near Ongulumbashe in Ovamboland . The armed struggle for the independence of South West Africa was officially opened.
