Omugulugwombashe or Ongulumbashe , also Omugulu-Gwombashe , Omugulu-gwOombashe or Omgulumbashe , officially according to the Namibian Presidential Office Omugulu gwOombashe , is a settlement in the constituency of Tsandi in the Omusati region in northern Namibia . history

In 1966 the United Nations withdrew South Africa 's mandate for the administration of South West Africa and placed it under its own administration. South Africa did not accept this resolution. Omugulugwombashe had been a training camp of the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN), which led the Namibian liberation struggle , since June 1966 . It was under the command of John Ya Otto to whom 90 trainees were subordinate.

On August 26, 1966, eight attack helicopters of the South African Army attacked the 17 PLAN fighters stationed there at the time in Omugulugwombashe. This attack is considered to be the beginning of the Namibian liberation struggle. In commemoration of this event, August 26th is a heroic day in Namibia . On this day, the United Nations commemorates the event as part of the Namibia Day .

On August 26, 2013, a statue of Sam Nujoma, erected by the North Korean company Mansudae Overseas Projects , was unveiled in honor of the Namibian founding president Sam Nujoma and in memory of the attack in 1966 . The statue cost 284,200 Namibia dollars . Another memorial, also made by Mansudae, was unveiled in May 2014.
