Omusati ( Oshivambo for mopane tree ) is one of the 14 regions of Namibia and is located in the north of the country. Omusati has around 250,000 inhabitants (around nine percent of Namibia's population) and, as part of Ovamboland, has a typically high population density.

The Omusati region is criss-crossed by extensive sand dune areas. The predominant plants are the mopane (Omusati), Makalani (Omilunga), wild figs (Omikwiyu) and Marula (Omigongo).

population

According to the 2011 census , 96.1 percent of the Oshivambo area's residents speak as their primary language. Otjiherero follows with 2.8 percent. Only eight residents use German as their main language.

Omusati is the home region of Sam Nujoma , the first President of Namibia.

politics

The regional governor of the region is Erkki Endjala of the ruling SWAPO . She took office after the 2010 regional council elections . She is supported by 12 regional council members, one for each constituency.

Chief Regional Officer (highest administrative officer; similar to a managing director) is Amutenya Andowa . This is supported by four directors in the areas of development, general and human resources, education and health.

School and medical facilities are heavily funded by the Namibian government in Windhoek .

Agriculture

At present, agriculture is still based primarily on co-supply agriculture. The potential for more extensive land use is rated as very high. In view of this, a large irrigation project was started, in which (as of January 2011) 5000 tons of corn , 2000 tons of grain , 180 tons of bananas , 120,000 watermelons , 5000 sweet melons and 20,000 butternut are harvested annually . The grain and maize are processed in regional mills .

In 2010 there were 276,975 cattle, 14,737 sheep, 245,497 goats and 155,939 poultry in the region. In addition, the "Omahenene Aquaculture Center" has been in operation since 2004, where freshwater fish are bred.

Infrastructure

The traffic development of the region, including roads and airfields ( Ruacana airport ), is considered to be relatively good.

Social and health

The Omusati region has 143 health facilities. These include four hospitals , six health centers, 39 clinics and 94 health stations.

In 2001, the average life expectancy at the time of birth was given as 46 years for men and 50 years for women. The spread of AIDS in the north of the country is well above the Namibian average.
