Okahao is a city and the administrative seat of the constituency of the same name in the Omusati region in northern Namibia . Okahao has 1600 inhabitants (as of 2011). The city lives from agriculture and is located about 70 kilometers southwest of Oshakati , 25 kilometers from Tsandi and 55 kilometers from Outapi .

The surrounding settlements near Okahao include Ongandjera , the birthplace of Samuel Nujoma , Namibia's first president. Ongandjera is also the seat of the Ongandjera kings . Other villages are Etunda ( 17 ° 54 ′  S , 15 ° 6 ′  E ) and Oshimanya.

Okahao has an airport (FYOH), a gas station, a hospital and, since 2008, the Shilongo shopping center.

The name of the place is derived from the Oshivambo word "Okaiga" and means something like "small vessel for storing water".

history

The city and the surrounding villages are closely linked to the history of the Ongandjera kings and the Finnish missionaries of today's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia . The place is traditionally known as a spiritual spring.

Local politics

The city is headed by a municipal council with seven members, who are currently (as of December 2015) all members of SWAPO . In the local elections in 2015 , there was no opponent for SWAPO.
