A census in Namibia takes place in the South African state every ten years in accordance with international recommendations. These are carried out by the "Central Bureau of Statistics" in 1991, 2001 and 2011 by government order. The basis of a census is set out in Section 3 (2) of the Statistics Act (Act No. 66 of 1976). For the first time, the data will be evaluated in 2011 by the newly created Namibia Statistics Agency , which operates on the basis of the Statistics Act, 2011 (Act No 9 of 2011) and which will take over all the tasks of the CBS in 2012.

Since Namibia's independence in 1990, three censuses have been carried out (1991, 2001 and 2011). The preliminary results of the September 2011 census were published in April 2012. The full results were announced in late March 2013.

An interim report was prepared for the first time in 2016. In the future, this should always be carried out five years after a census.
