Johannes Simonius also Johann Simon (* 1565 in Burg (near Magdeburg) ; † May 29, 1627 in Uppsala (Sweden)) was a German philosopher, professor at the University of Rostock and the University of Uppsala .

Life

Johannes Simonius came to Rostock in 1590 as an instructor ( court master ) for Duke Wilhelm von Kurland , where he was enrolled at the university together with him for the winter semester 1590/91 under the rector Wilhelm Lauremberg . In August 1593 he received his Master's degree and in October of that year he was accepted into the Philosophical Faculty alongside Martin Brasch . In 1593, Duke Adolf Friedrich I was appointed (ducal) full professor of poetics to succeed Nathan Chyträus . From 1595 he held the position of ducal full professor of eloquence . Between 1597 and 1623 he was dean or vice dean of the Philosophical Faculty nine times, in 1602 Vice-Rector of Rector Ulrich, Duke of Pomerania, and in 1615 he was appointed protonotary of the court.

Recognized as a rhetorician far beyond the Baltic Sea region , Simonius followed a call from Johan Skytte to Uppsala as professor of eloquence and politics in 1625 at the age of 60 . He became the first holder of the Skytte professorship for politics and rhetoric ( Skytteanska professuren i statskunskap och vältalighet ), which is today the most prestigious award in political science worldwide.

From 1592 Johannes Simonius was married to Margarethe Schmede († 1603) from Wismar, a granddaughter of the Rostock councilor Lorenz Schmede. After her death, he was married for a second time from 1604 to Dorothea Everdt († 1631), daughter of the Rostock citizen and businessman Hans Everdt.

Individual evidence

  1. The date of death on May 29, 1627 corresponds to the information in the literature: Krey, Etwas, Krabbe as well as ISNI and the Kungliga Biblioteket (Sweden).
The DNB (with DDB, CERL, VIAF) and literature: Falkenberg and Grewolls name May 29, 1629.
Since the Skyttean professorship was already with Johannes Loccenius from 1628 (executive) , the year of death 1627 can be assumed.
