Josef Daum

Josef Daum (born February 8, 1924 in Merzig , † August 18, 2004 in Braunschweig ) was a German biologist, librarian and university professor. From 1967 to 1987 he was director of the Braunschweig University Library .

Life

Coming from a family in the south of France, Daum grew up in Merzig in the Saarland. After military service and captivity, he studied geology, botany, zoology and chemistry at the University of Saarbrücken from 1949 . There he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD. Daum then worked as an assistant at the Institute for Biology at Saarbrücken University. He decided to train for higher library service. He began his professional career in 1966 as head of the medical library at the TH Aachen . In 1967 he took over the management of the library of the TH Braunschweig . He participated in the planning and realization of the new building, which was inaugurated in 1972. In 1971 Daum became honorary professor for library studies at the TU Braunschweig. Dietmar Brandes was his successor as director of the Braunschweig University Library in 1987 .

Daum was active in numerous regional and national associations. From 1977 to 1979 he was chairman of the Association of German Librarians , and from 1979 to 1983 deputy chairman. He was very attached to the work of Wilhelm Raabe . From 1971 to 1994 he was President of the Raabe Society and also a member of the social association of clothing sellers . In 1977 he became chairman of the Braunschweigische Landesverein für Heimatschutz.

Daum was married to the restorer and master bookbinder Hella Daum, with whom he had put together a collection of Christian edifying literature.
