Dietmar Brandes (born March 12, 1948 in Braunschweig ) is a German botanist , university professor and librarian . His work focuses on geobotany , especially biodiversity research and invasion research . Dietmar Brandes was director of the Braunschweig University Library until 2013 . From 2014 to 2016 he was President of the Braunschweig Scientific Society .

Life

Brandes was awarded the Hörlein Prize of the vdbiol in Vienna in 1966, even before his Abitur at the Neue Oberschule grammar school , for a study of vegetation studies. In the winter semester 1968/69 he began studying chemistry and botany at the TU Braunschweig . In 1973 he obtained his diploma and wrote his diploma thesis at the Institute for Inorganic Chemistry at the TU Braunschweig. There he also worked as a research assistant. Brandes received his doctorate in 1975 from the Technical University of Braunschweig under Armand Blaschette (1933–2015) on preparative and mechanistic investigations on organosilicon peroxides . This gave him the degree of Doctor of Science ( Dr. rer. Nat. ). In 1985 he completed his habilitation in Braunschweig with The ruderal vegetation of eastern Lower Saxony: syntaxonomic structure, distribution and living conditions in botany.

Brandes is head of the working group "Vegetation Ecology and Experimental Plant Sociology" at the Institute for Plant Biology at the TU Braunschweig. The focus of his working group is on biodiversity research of selected structures and regions, on the investigation of anthropogenic disturbances and impairment of vegetation [...] and on invasion research . The "literature database on vegetation ecology of Central Europe" was brought into being by him. The special thing about the database is that scientists can enter their publications themselves. Brandes was a founding member of the Common Library Network (GBV) and is a member of the GBV's group management.

Dietmar Brandes has been a member of the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft (BWG) since 1996, of which he was Vice President in 2013. From January 2014 to December 2016 he was President of the BWG. From 1989 to 2011 he was the first chairman of the Friends of the Braunschweig Botanical Garden . In 2014 he was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Herzog August Library by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture .
