The film depicts the marriages in a northern Italian family of the big bourgeoisie: Fabrizios with Valeria and those of his cousin Maria Teresa with Marcello.
On a boat trip, Maria Teresa introduces her cousin Fabrizio to Valeria. Fabrizio's relationship with Valeria is passionate. Maria Teresa, who does not want to end up as an “old girl”, marries the lawyer Marcello. Its impotence is a burden on the young marriage. So Valeria decides to couple Maria Teresa with the lawyer Cesare Molteni. But Maria Teresa backs down at the last moment. When Valeria is killed on a hunting trip, Fabrizio is suspected of murder. Now Maria Teresa wants to prove Fabrizio's innocence with the help of her husband. But Marcello refuses and the family is looking for lawyers for the examining magistrate Renato Marinoni. That is now also in the “spiral of fog” of the San Germano, in which the nurse Lavinia, who treats Fabrizio, also falls.
