action
Baltimore in 1962: Overweight student Tracy Turnblad lives very lonely with her equally overweight mother Edna, who has given up all of her dreams and hopes because of her body problems, and her father Wilbur, who owns a poorly-running joke shop. Her only real friend is the outsider Penny Pingleton, who is constantly suppressed and patronized by her mother. Tracy's biggest dream is to dance on the Corny Collins Show , the hippest show on local television that only shows the prettiest and most beloved teenagers in town. While her mother is skeptical and is afraid that her daughter will be mocked because of her appearance, her father supports her and encourages her to make his dreams come true.
When she is actually allowed to take part in the show thanks to her persistence and her self-confidence, she becomes a star overnight - precisely because of her average appearance and her naturalness. But she falls in love with the star of the show, the young singer Link Larkin, who is waiting for his big break and has a relationship with the arrogant Amber von Tussle. Tracy uses her new celebrity to campaign against the separation of blacks and whites on the Corny Collins show , which Amber von Tussle and her mother Velma are trying to prevent. But despite all the setbacks, Tracy's zest for life and her positive attitude remain unbroken and she even applies for the title of Miss Teenage Hairspray in 1962 .
