Hairspray is an American fiction film from 1988 that was directed and written by John Waters . Hairspray , a mixture of comedy and drama , in contrast to Waters' more radical early works, reached a mass audience and developed into a cult film . A Broadway musical and a remake were produced based on this film .

action

The film is set in the United States in 1962. The obese Tracy Turnblad, an "upper-class" teenager, according to the film, becomes the star of the Corny Collins dance show on local Baltimore television . This makes her a competitor to Amber von Tussle, who was the star of the show until Tracy's appearance. Both fight for the title of the Miss Autoshow , which is chosen by the viewers of the show. Despite intrigues on the part of Amber, Tracy not only manages to get closer and closer to the title, but also to relax Amber's boyfriend. In parallel to the battle for the Miss Auto Show title , racial conflicts develop . Despite the U.S. Supreme Court ruling against segregation , the Corny Collins Show is only allowed to whites. The Corny Collins Show for colored people is only broadcast on the last Thursday of the month . Motormouth Maybelle, the presenter of this show and also the owner of a record shop in Baltimore's Black Quarter, will no longer accept this. She calls on the Baltimore Blacks to go to an open air Corny Collins show at an amusement park. Tracy takes Motormouth's side. The protests in the amusement park lead to riots; Tracy is arrested and held in the youth home. At the coronation of the Miss Auto Show shortly afterwards , Tracy would actually be the winner - but because she is in the correctional facility , the jury disqualifies her and declares Amber the winner. But Tracy's friends demonstrate for her release; and Tracy shows up in time for the Miss Auto Show's crowning glory .

criticism

"A sometimes shrill, mostly funny teenage comedy that draws fat people lovingly, denounces arrogance and ignorance and describes tolerance as indispensable in human interaction."

Awards

The film was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in six categories in 1989 , including directing and screenwriting. In 1988 John Waters was nominated for a Sundance Film Festival award.
