beatnik
The term Beatnik was invented by Herb Caen of the San Francisco Chronicle for the members of the Beat Generation (direction of American literature after World War II , mainly during the 1950s to mid-1960s). The name is based on Sputnik, which was launched into space from the Soviet Union .
Symbols of this subculture are bebop and modern jazz and the constant preoccupation with literature ; a closely related term is that of the hipster .
