Charles Plymell (born April 26, 1935 in Holcomb , Kansas ) is an American author , publisher , editor . He belonged to the literary " beat generation ".

Life

Plymell grew up on a farm in Kansas during the Great Depression . He attended the military academy in San Antonio , but came back to Wichita and, according to his own admission , spent his time in cars on "Highway 66" (called: Benzedrine Highway ), with jazz, hipsters and hustlers . On the other hand, in 1955 he began studying philosophy, art, and English at Wichita State University . He worked as a printer . Plymell is counted with the poet Michael McClure and artist Bruce Conner to the Kansas bohemian of the Wichita Vortex .

Plymell met Neal Cassady in 1962 , to whom he felt connected. Cassidy, his girlfriend and Allen Ginsberg lived in the same house as Plymell for a while. Plymell worked in a variety of jobs, including as a unionized ( Teamsters ) organized dock worker.

In 1967, Plymell printed the first issue of the ZAP Comix , by Robert Crumb and (later) S. Clay Wilson. His first novel, published in 1971 under the title The Last of the Moccasins , tells the wild and short life of his sister. Although Plymell shows criticism of civilization in his works, he sees the age of apostasy as a time of historical change, not of decline.

Plymell went in 1970 after Maryland and earned his master's degree (MA) in an open letter ( Creative Writing ) at Elliot Coleman at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , but turned down a university place and moved rather in the Bowery . In 1974 he, his wife Pamela (Mary Beaches daughter) and Josh Norton founded the Cherry Valley Editions , where he wrote his own books, but in addition to many lesser-known authors also Allen Ginsberg ( Poems All Over the Place ), Herbert Huncke , Ray Bremser ( Blowing Mouth The Jazz Poems 1958-1970 ), William S. Burroughs ( Tornado Alley. Cobblestone Gardens ) and the surrealist Charles Henri Ford .

At the 6th International Tyrolean Literature Days in Hall in Tirol from September 12th to 14th, 2008, Plymell was invited as a guest, where he read some of his poems and excerpts from his book Was Poe Afraid .

Plymell now lives in Cherry Valley , New York .
