Tuli Kupferberg
Naphtali "Tuli" Kupferberg (born September 28, 1923 in New York City , † July 12, 2010 ibid) was an American beatnik poet, author, cartoonist and editor. He was also a co-founder of the rock band The Fugs .
Life
In 1944, Kupferberg graduated from Brooklyn College of Arts . He then studied at the New School of Social Research , worked for the League for Sexual Freedom and taught at the "Free University".
In 1958 he founded Birth magazine , which appeared in only three issues, but published authoritative authors of the Beat Generation such as Allen Ginsberg . According to a true story, Ginsberg immortalized Kupferberg in his main work Howl as the man who jumped from the Brooklyn Bridge and then disappeared into Chinatown without being recognized. In 1961 Kupferberg published the book Beatniks; or, The War Against the Beats . At the end of 1964 he founded the rock band The Fugs with Ed Sanders , which existed until 1969. Kupferberg wrote many of the group's songs. He also produced two solo albums, No Deposit, No Return (1964), a compilation of spoken poetry, and Tuli & Friends (1987). Urban Gwerder published first publications by Kupferberg in Europe in his magazine Hotcha .
After the time with the Fugs, Kupferberg devoted himself more to theater work. In 1984 there was a reunion of the band, which has been recording albums again and going on tours.
Kupferberg's best-known work is probably 1001 Ways to Beat the Draft from 1966, a satirical collage he created with Robert Bashlow. In 2000 his cartoon collection Teach Yourself Fucking came out.
In 2003, shortly before Kupferberg's eightieth birthday, The Fugs Final CD (Part 1) was released (German: "The last CD of the Fugs (Part 1)"). In this context, Kupferberg described himself as the oldest rock star in the world .
In 2009 Kupferberg suffered two strokes that made him blind.
