Tracie Bennett

Tracie Bennett (born on 17th June 1961 in Leigh , Lancashire as Tracey Anne Bennett ) is an English actress and musical actress. She has received two Olivier Awards for her roles in the musicals She Loves Me and Hairspray, and has won multiple awards and a Tony Award nomination for her role as Judy Garland in the Broadway production of the biographical play End of the Rainbow .

Career

Tracie Bennett trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theater Arts in Clapham, London . Her television debut was in the children's series Going Out . She became known to a wider audience when she played the role of Sharon Gaskell in the television series Coronation Street from 1982 to 1984 and to which she briefly returned in 1999. Numerous other appearances in films and television series followed.

In addition, she has also established herself as a stage actress in both dramas and musicals. In 1994 she received her first Olivier Award for best supporting actress in a musical for her role in the musical She Loves Me at the Savoy Theater in London . In 2000 she played Ida in the musical Honk! , an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Ugly Duckling , which received an Olivier Award for Best Musical that year . She received another nomination for an Olivier Award in 2004 for her role in the London production of the musical High Society .

From January 2006 to July 2007 she played Madame Thénardier in the musical Les Misérables at the Queen's Theater in London . In October 2007 she took on the role of Velma von Tussle in the musical Hairspray at London's Shaftesbury Theater , for which she was awarded her second Olivier Award for best supporting actress in a musical in March 2008 .

In February 2010, she took on the role of Judy Garland in the biographical play End of the Rainbow , which was a huge success and for which she received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress . When the play went to New York's Broadway in March 2012 and Tracie Bennett also took on her role there, she received an Outer Critics Circle Award and a Drama Desk Award , both for best actress and a nomination for a Tony Award in the same category.

In 2015 she played the title role in the musical Mrs Henderson Presents at the Theater Royal in Bath , which then moved to London's Noël Coward Theater in February 2016 . For this role, she received another nomination for the Olivier Award 2016 for best actress in a musical.
