Werner Freund

Werner Freund (born March 2, 1933 in Garbenteich ; † February 9, 2014 in Merzig ) was a German wolf researcher.

Life

Freund initially worked as a gardener , predator keeper, expedition leader, from 1955 for the Federal Border Guard and in 1957 switched to the Bundeswehr as a sergeant . He was most recently stationed with the rank of sergeant in the barracks Auf der Ell at the paratrooper battalion 262 in Merzig , where he conducted the troop-bound lone fighter courses as an instructor and looked after the battalion mascot, a Kodiak bear , as an animal keeper .

Freund was married and had lived in Merzig since 1972. With the support of the city, he built the Werner-Freund-Wolfspark in 1977 , which is accessible to visitors free of charge. The Werner Freund Expedition Museum, in which exhibits from his travels are exhibited, is located in the city center of Merzig .

Freund was best known for living with his wolf packs . He wrote several books about their behavior , including wolf among wolves .

He was awarded the Saarland Order of Merit in 1995 for his initiative around wolves and for the establishment of the Wolf Park .

Werner Freund died on February 9, 2014 at the age of 80.
