Ottmar Schreiner (born February 21, 1946 in Merzig ; † April 6, 2013 in Saarlouis ) was a German politician . He was considered one of the most prominent representatives of the left wing of the SPD . From 1980 until his death he was a member of the Bundestag , from 1997 to 1998 deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and from 1998 to 1999 federal manager of the SPD. For twelve years he was the federal chairman of one of the largest working groups within the Social Democratic Party of Germany ( Working Group for Workers' Questions (AfA)).

Life and work

After graduating from high school at Stefansberg Merzig in 1966, he initially served as a temporary soldier in the German Armed Forces . He trained as a reserve officer with the paratrooper troops and then took part in military exercises for decades as a first lieutenant in the reserve. After training as a reserve officer, he completed a law degree at the Saarland University , the Free University of Berlin and Lausanne from 1968 .

In the summer of 2010, Schreiner was diagnosed with bladder cancer, after which he withdrew from the public for two operations and one follow-up treatment until the end of the year. In January 2013, Schreiner decided not to run for the Bundestag because of the recurrence of cancer. He had to go back to the hospital and died on April 6, 2013 of complications from the illness. On April 12th he was buried in the old cemetery in Saarlouis. More than 700 people attended the funeral ceremony in the Catholic Church of St. Ludwig with speeches by the SPD federal chairman Sigmar Gabriel , the SPD state chairman Heiko Maas and the IG Metall district chairman Armin Schild .

Ottmar Schreiner was married and they have two daughters. Schreiner's wife brought a son into the family from his first marriage.

In Berlin, Schreiner lived in the house at Am Kupfergraben 6 opposite the Pergamon Museum , in the same house as Angela Merkel , in which Lothar de Maizière also has his office.

Since 1981 he was a member of IG Metall .

Political party

Schreiner joined the SPD in 1969 and was initially primarily involved with the Jusos and student politics at universities.

Schreiner was one of the founding members of the Juso college groups . As their candidate, he was in the student parliament of the University of Saarland in Saarbrücken selected and then was 1970/72 Chairman of the General Student Committee (AStA). 1972–1973 he was a member of the board of the Association of German Student Associations (VDS).

Schreiner was Deputy Federal Chairman of the Jusos from 1974 to 1977 and ran for the office of Federal Chairman in 1977 and 1978 respectively. In 1977, however, he could not prevail against Klaus Uwe Benneter and in 1978 not against Gerhard Schröder . Within the Jusos, Schreiner belonged to the stream of reform socialists .

From 1998 to 1999 he was federal manager of the SPD at the suggestion of the then party chairman Oskar Lafontaine . Six months after his resignation in March 1999, Schreiner also left the office in September, which his predecessor Franz Müntefering temporarily took over.

From 2000 to 2012 he was federal chairman of the working group for employee issues . He was also a member of the SPD federal executive from 2001 to 2011.

MP

Ottmar Schreiner had been a member of the German Bundestag since 1980, where he was spokesperson for social policy from 1990 to 1997 and deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group from 1997 to 1998 .

After Schreiner had always moved into the Bundestag via the Saarland SPD state list , from 1990 to 2005 he was always directly elected in the Saarlouis constituency. In 2009 he came back to the Bundestag via the state list.

Since 2005 Schreiner has been a full member of the Committee on European Union Affairs and a deputy member of the Committee on Labor and Social Affairs .

Within the SPD parliamentary group, he belonged to the parliamentary left . He was always a sharp critic of Agenda 2010 and was the only member of the grand coalition to vote against the delivery of submarines to Pakistan.

In January 2013, Schreiner decided not to run again for the 2013 federal election because of his cancer .
