The Church of St. Maria Magdalena is a Roman Catholic parish church in Brotdorf , a district of Merzig , district of Merzig-Wadern , Saarland . She bears the patronage of St. Mary Magdalene . In the list of monuments of the Saarland the church building is a single monument listed.

history

Since the parish church of Brotdorf from 1602 had become too small, it was decided at the beginning of the 1930s to rebuild and expand the church. The plans were drawn up by Clemens Holzmeister , who had distinguished himself as an architect of Catholic sacred buildings and taught at the art academies in Vienna and Düsseldorf. The foundation stone was laid on May 16, 1932 . The architect Hubert Rost was responsible for the management of the construction work, while the Jager construction company in Merzig was responsible for the execution.

The tower and choir of the old church remained and were integrated into the new building. The old nave became the choir of the new church building to which the new nave with a new tower was added to the north. Natural stone from the Altmeier quarry on “Schleienweg” was used as the building material for the newly built parts , which remained unplastered and thus contrasts with the plastered parts of the old church.

The church suffered some damage during World War II , which was repaired in 1948 as part of a restoration . In 1953 a tower clock was installed , in 1955 wall paintings were installed inside the church, in 1963 a gallery was built and in 1966 the left side altar was moved to the choir of the old church. As part of an interior renovation , new benches were installed in 1988 . In the 1990s, further alterations and renovations took place. A confessional room was set up in 1990 , the tower blinds were renewed in 1992 and a window was built into the confessional room in 1995 .

Architecture and equipment

The structure designed by Holzmeister has a simple and clear structure with an emphasis on the vertical and horizontal. The rising masonry made of natural stone is unplastered and has no jewelry or artistic modeling. There is only a simple cross above the main portal . The massive tower at the north-western corner of the nave forms the structural center of the entire complex.

Inside the church, the main focus is on the niche of the chancel with the tabernacle , which is brightly contrasted with the rest of the church. The brightness is generated by indirect light that falls into the niche from above through several windows that are not visible from the nave.

The church's furnishings include 25 round windows in predominantly blue and red tones, which were designed in 1932 by glass painter Anton Wendling in collaboration with Holzmeister. The wall paintings were added in 1955 by church painter Schmitt ( Nennig ). The mosaics of the Way of the Cross and on the front of the two ambones date from 1956 and are works by the painter Albert Kettenhofen ( Hilringen ). The window installed in the confessional chapel in 1995 shows a depiction of Blessed Adolph Kolping .

The ringing of three cast steel bells , which were made by the Bochum Association in 1924, was taken over from the old church . In the course of the installation of a tower clock in 1953, an electrical bell system was installed.

organ

For the rebuilt and expanded parish church, the company Späth ( Mengen ) delivered an organ with 24 registers in 1932 . The pipes of this instrument, built as Opus 425, were split up behind the side altars. The game table was in the part of the choir room that is now used as a confessional room . When a gallery was built in the entrance area opposite the chancel in 1963, the Späth company received the order to build a new organ with 25 registers to replace the damaged organ from 1932. For cost reasons it was decided to build a new one instead of a repair. After the separation from the headquarters of the company Späth in Mengen in 1964, the company Freiburg Orgelbau ( March (Breisgau) ), newly founded by August Späth and his son Hartwig, carried out the order to build the organ in 1965/1966. The instrument, built as Opus 8, was consecrated on July 17, 1966. In 1994 the Hugo Mayer company ( Heusweiler ) carried out a renovation of the organ. The instrument, which is set up on the gallery built in 1963, has had 27 registers with 1733 sounding pipes, distributed over two manuals and pedal , since the renovation .
