history

Parish

The first Christian testimony of Schwemlingen can be found in a document from around 1150, which speaks of a donation of land to the Mettlach monastery for the soul of the giver's daughter. This is also the first written mention of the place.

The village of Schwemlingen belonged to the 10/11. In the 19th century the parish of St. Gangolf was founded , with the parish church on the mountainside near Montclair Castle , as a branch of this parish.

There is evidence of a chapel in Schwemlingen dating from 1739 , which was very likely built around 1600 and was dedicated to Saints Sebastian and Laurentius. Due to the great distance to the parish church and its location on the other side of the Saar , the way to the church services was difficult for the Schwemlinger parishioners and over time the call for church independence became loud. In 1760, for example, a letter of appeal was sent to the auxiliary bishop visiting St. Gangolf , which was answered by the promise of a regular Sunday and public holiday mass in the Schwemlinger chapel.

However, after many unsuccessful attempts and irritations, the goal of establishing an independent Schwemlinger parish could only be gradually realized at the beginning of the 20th century. First of all, Schwemlingen and the Dreisbach branch were elevated to the status of an independent chapel community in Schwemlingen-Dreisbach in 1908, and on May 15, 1908, the parish vicar Kröll, the first priest of the locality, was appointed to his office. Vicar Kröll moved into the newly built rectory in 1912 , while the parish church, which was also newly built, was put into service in 1914. The chapel parish was raised to a full parish on September 1, 1925. The Schwemlinger chapel was demolished in the same year because of a road widening.

Building history

Even before the efforts to achieve church independence in Schwemlingen at the beginning of the 20th century led to the founding of the Schwemlingen-Dreisbach chapel community , a church building association was founded in 1897 with the aim of collecting funds for the construction of its own parish church.

Initially, however, the chapel congregation's deed of construction stipulated the construction of a rectory, which was built in 1911/12 according to plans by the architect Peter Marx ( Trier ). The existing financial resources were used up by the construction of the rectory, but the building of the church was immediately started. The funds required for this were raised in the course of 1912/13, so that the groundbreaking ceremony for the church could take place in March 1913. As before for the rectory, Peter Marx was also responsible for the construction plans for the church building. At Corpus Christi 1913 could Grundsteinlegung be made, and already on Palm Sunday 1914, the newly built church was benediziert be. The solemn consecration took place on May 24, 1917 .

During the Second World War , the church suffered considerable damage, the most severe of which could be removed by 1947. Between 1974 and 1983 and in 2000 the church underwent two major renovations .

Furnishing

The main and two side altars date from the time the church was built from 1913 to 1914 and were designed by Peter Marx (Trier), the church's architect. Like the tabernacle , which is part of the main altar, they were restored in 1976 by the Daniel company ( Geisenheim / Rhein ). The Daniel company also restored the pulpit that was built before 1945 . The altarpiece in the main altar comes from the old chapel, demolished in 1925 , like the figure of St. Lawrence in the choir and the figure of St. Sebastian . Other items of equipment in the choir are the celebration altar from 1977, as well as the ambo and sedilies from 1977/78, which were made by the sculptor Heinz Oliberius ( St. Wendel ).

The 14 windows of the church were designed in 1956 by glass painter Walter Bettendorf ( Konz ). The company Kaschenbach (Trier) was responsible for the execution of the windows. Five windows show representations of the joyous, five further windows representations of the glorious rosary . The three windows in the choir show representations of the sacrifice of the Melchizedek , the manna miracle , the wonderful multiplication of bread ( Mt 14 : 13-21  EU ), the Lord's Supper , as well as simple ornaments in the form of wine and ears of wheat . The window above the gallery shows St. Lawrence, the patron saint of the parish. The painting of the church was done in 1976 by the Philipp company (Wehlen / Mosel).

There is also a baptismal font in the church from the time before 1945, as well as stations of the cross made of terracotta , which were manufactured in 1913/14 by the company Villeroy & Boch ( Mettlach ) and were restored in 1976. The christening set from 1977 was supplied by the Schreibmayr company ( Munich ), as were three altar candlesticks for the celebration altar. The furnishings also include a mural restored in 1976 , sacrament crockery that was purchased before 1945, ciborias / monstrances that were also purchased before 1945 but were newly gilded , smoke barrels and holy water containers that were purchased between 1950 and 1965, old candlesticks made before 1945 , an Easter candlestick from St. Ulrich / South Tyrol , as well as confessionals , which were restored in 1976 by the Daniel company (Geisenheim / Rhein).

In the church there is also a Pietà , a depiction of Christ " Ecce homo " and a crucifixion group , which were restored in 1980 by the Mrziglod ( Tholey ) company . There is a figure of Our Lady in the front garden of the rectory .

The church's current organ was inaugurated on October 10, 1993. Was built in the slider chest -instrument by the company Walcker as opus 5913. It has 14 (16) register , divided into 2 manuals and pedal . The playing and stop action is mechanical.
