Pentecostal quack

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Whitsun quack is a prayerful custom from the Palatinate and Alsace , in which children walk through the village on Whitsun with colorfully decorated handcarts - the “ Whitsun quack” - and serenade , for which they get eggs, bacon or money.

The folklorist Helmut Seebach derives the word "Quack" from the dialect expression customary in the Palatinate for the nestling , the young bird that was carried around as a symbol of summer. He classifies the quack custom under the fool 's custom , where the last person who has come, similar to the “ wild man ”, is parodistically mocked and honored as the “king of fools”; the foliage of the quack corresponds to the stained robe of the fool, the flower hat of the crown.

The custom is cultivated in the Saar-Palatinate towns of Limbach (Kirkel) , Altstadt (Kirkel) , Niederbexbach and Wolfersheim , the Palatinate towns of Bechhofen , Käshofen Blaubach , Matzenbach Dimbach , Ruppertsweiler and Lemberg , as well as in some Hunsrück communities of the Thalfang ( Bäsch , Immert) community , Talling ) and in several Alsatian places.
