Elisabeth Anna von Prussia (born February 8, 1857 in Potsdam , † August 28, 1895 in Fulda ) was a member of the House of Hohenzollern and, by marriage, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Oldenburg (1878–1895).

Life

Elisabeth Anna of Prussia was the second eldest daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia and his wife Maria Anna von Anhalt-Dessau . Through her sisters Marie and Luise Margareta , she was related by marriage to the houses of Orange-Nassau and Saxony-Altenburg and the British royal family. As the wife of Prince Gustav Adolf, her niece Margaret was the Swedish Crown Princess.

On February 18, 1878, Elisabeth Anna married Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich August von Oldenburg in Berlin . It was a double wedding at which Princess Charlotte of Prussia , the eldest daughter of the Prussian Crown Prince couple Friedrich and Victoria , was married to Hereditary Prince Bernhard of Saxe-Meiningen . The wedding was a great spectacle , as it was the first event of its kind since the founding of the German Empire under the chairmanship of the Prussian Hohenzollern . In addition to the German princes, King Leopold II of Belgium and his wife Marie Henriette as well as Charlotte's uncle Eduard , Prince of Wales , traveled to the wedding of the emperor's granddaughter .

Elisabeth died on August 28, 1895, before her husband had ascended the Oldenburg throne and was buried in the Grand Ducal mausoleum . In her honor he named the new residence, which had been under construction since 1894, the Elisabeth-Anna-Palais . Friedrich August married Elisabeth Alexandrine Mathilde von Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1896 , daughter of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg by a third marriage.
