Princess Luise Margarete Alexandra Viktoria Agnes of Prussia VA (* July 25, 1860 in Potsdam , † March 14, 1917 in Clarence House ) was a Prussian princess, later a member of the British royal family through her marriage to Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn .

origin

Princess Luise Margarete was born in the Marble Palace in Potsdam. Her father Prince Friedrich Karl (1828–1885) was the son of Carl von Prussia and his wife Marie von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach . Her mother was Princess Maria Anna of Anhalt-Dessau (1837–1906), daughter of Leopold IV of Anhalt-Dessau . Through her father she was a great niece of Kaiser Wilhelm I.

On March 13, 1879, she married Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn , at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle . Her husband was a son of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . After their wedding, she carried the title of Royal Highness and Duchess of Connaught. Her husband was Governor General of Canada from 1911 to 1916 . Three children emerged from the joint relationship:

The Duchess died of flu at Clarence House at the age of only 56 . She was the first member of the British royal family to be cremated ; after her cremation at Golders Green Crematorium , her urn was buried in the Royal Cemetery at Frogmore , Windsor. Her husband survived her by 25 years.
