A wash bowl (Austrian: Lavoir ) is a container made of ceramic , stainless steel or plastic that nowadays helps to wash a bedridden patient .

In earlier times, before house connections were introduced , wash bowls were used in bedrooms and bathrooms together with a water jug for morning personal hygiene because there was no running water and warm water first had to be prepared on the stove. In the past there were mainly enameled or ceramic wash bowls .

Can in basins cleaning disinfector are rinsed and disinfected.
