Sound-damped engine test bench

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sound- damped engine test bench built between 1933 and 1935 is located in the middle of the aerodynamic park in the Berlin district of Adlershof . Here, aircraft engines with propellers (with a maximum diameter of five meters) were tested for their effectiveness, resilience and service life. In spinning tests, these screws were sometimes loaded well above their rated speed . By redirecting the air flow several times and lining the building with various wooden structures, it was possible to achieve particularly effective sound absorption. The two side exhaust towers (with a height of 15 meters) with the upper rim and the flowing contours of the base components in in- situ concrete are striking .

The former engine test bench has been transferred to the Humboldt University . In addition to the institute buildings, this technical monument is operated by the student parliament as a café and used as a multifunctional facility for cultural and social purposes.

As part of the former location of the German Research Institute for Aviation, the soundproofed engine test bench is a listed building.
