Frogmore House

Frogmore (officially Frogmore Estate ) is an estate on the grounds of Windsor Castle in Berkshire, England . Distinctive buildings are Frogmore House , the mausoleum of the Duchess of Kent , the Royal Mausoleum for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and the Royal Burial Ground as the private cemetery of the royal family . The property is used privately by the royal family and is only open to the public on a few days of the year. The name is derived from the frogs that have always lived in large numbers in the low-lying swampy area near the Thames . Frogmore Cottage is also on the property .

Frogmore House

Frogmore House

Frogmore House was built in 1680 and was rebuilt by King George III in 1792 . Bought as a country palace for Queen Charlotte. Queen Victoria's mother, Victoria von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld, Duchess of Kent , lived here as a widow and was later buried in a mausoleum built for her in the park (see below). After her death, Frogmore House served as a residence for various relatives of the royal family. Around 1900, for example, Admiral Prince Ludwig Alexander von Battenberg and Princess Victoria Alberta of Hesse and near Rhine , a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, lived here. Their son Louis , later First Sea Lord and Viceroy of India , was born at Frogmore House. On May 19, 2018, the wedding took place here ball for Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle at the invitation of the groom father, Charles, Prince of Wales , instead (see also: Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ) .

Mausoleum of the Duchess of Kent
