Princess Marie of Prussia , full name Marie Elisabeth Louise Frederika of Prussia (born September 14, 1855 in the Marble Palace in Potsdam , † June 20, 1888 in Dresden ) was a member of the House of Hohenzollern and by marriage was Princess of the Netherlands , later Princess of Saxony- Altenburg .

Princess Marie was the eldest daughter of the Prussian Field Marshal Prince Friedrich Karl Nikolaus of Prussia (1828–1885) and his wife, Princess Maria Anna von Anhalt-Dessau (1837–1906), who in turn was the youngest daughter of Duke Leopold IV. Friedrich and the Princess Friederike of Prussia was.

On August 24, 1878, Princess Marie married Prince Heinrich von Oranien-Nassau (1820–1879) in the New Palais in Potsdam , who had been Governor of Luxembourg and Lieutenant Admiralty since 1850 . He was the third son of the Dutch King Wilhelm II and his wife, the Russian Grand Duchess Anna Pavlovna . The reason for the marriage was the impending end of the Orange-Nassau dynasty, as the king had no married sons at that time. However, the marriage remained childless.

Princess Marie was the godmother of her nephew Prince Arthur of Connaught , the only son of her sister Luise Margareta, Duchess of Connaught . The christening ceremonies took place in the private chapel at Windsor Castle .

Six years after Prince Heinrich's death, on May 6, 1885, Princess Marie went to Berlin for a second marriage to Prince Albert von Sachsen-Altenburg (1843-1902), a son of Prince Edward and his second wife, Princess Luise Caroline Reuss Greiz, a. From this marriage, which according to all reports went harmoniously, two daughters were born:

  • Olga Elisabeth (1886–1955) ⚭ 1913 Count Carl Friedrich von Pückler-Burghauss (1886–1945)
  • Marie (1888–1947) ⚭ 1911–1921 Prince Heinrich XXXV. Reuss to Köstritz (1887–1936)

The princess died in 1888 as a result of childbed fever and was buried in the family crypt of those of Sachsen-Altenburg. Her husband married Helena Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1857–1936), a niece of Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm of Mecklenburg-Strelitz , and the granddaughter of Russian Grand Duke Michael Pawlowitsch Romanow, for the second time in Remplin .
