Prince Albert of Saxe-Altenburg

Albert Heinrich Joseph Carl Viktor Georg Friedrich von Sachsen-Altenburg (born April 14, 1843 in Munich , † May 22, 1902 in Serrahn ) was a prince of Sachsen-Altenburg and Prussian general of the cavalry .

Life

Albert was the only surviving son of Prince Eduard von Sachsen-Altenburg (1804–1852) and came from his second marriage to Luise (1822–1875), daughter of Prince Heinrich XIX. Reuss to Greiz .

Albert joined the Saxon-Altenburg troop contingent in the spring of 1860 and was appointed second lieutenant there in September of the same year . In May 1861 he joined the Prussian Army and was employed in the Westphalian Uhlan Regiment No. 5 . From 16 January to 21 April 1864 he was during the war against Denmark as aide to of Prussia Albrecht commanded. During this time Albert took part in the battles at Oeversee , Fredericia and Nübel as well as the storming of the Düppeler Schanzen .

In January 1865 he took his leave, entered the service of the Russian tsar and became general à la suite here . Albert had good relations with the court in Saint Petersburg and was considered a close friend of Tsar Alexander III. In 1890 he accompanied Kaiser Wilhelm II and Chancellor Leo von Caprivi on a trip to Russia.

On the occasion of the war against France , Albert returned to Germany in 1870 and took part in the battles near Weißenburg , Wörth , Sedan and Orléans on the staff of the 4th Cavalry Division under Albrecht von Prussia .

Back in Russia, Albert rose to the command of the Grodno Leib-Garde-Hussar Regiment and fought in the Russo-Ottoman War in 1877/78 . In 1887 he ended his service in the Tsarist army and was established in May 1887 with the character as a major general employed by the officers à la suite of the Prussian army. On December 1, 1888, Albert received the patent for this rank and was commanded to serve with the staff of the Guard Cavalry Division . On March 22, 1889, he was appointed commander of the 3rd Guards Cavalry Brigade in Berlin. In this position Albert was promoted to Lieutenant General on September 19, 1891, the rank and fees of a division commander, before he was transferred to officers à la suite of the army on November 3, 1891. On September 1, 1896, he was promoted to general of the cavalry.

In 1896 Albert acquired the Mecklenburg estate Kuchelmiß , including Serrahn , Wilsen, Wilser Hütte and Hinzenhagen, from Count Count von Hahn . Shortly afterwards, Ahrenshagen and Seegrube were also in his possession. The area was considered to be one of the best red deer hunts .

Since 1900 he was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .

At his request, Albert was buried in a beech forest south of Wilsen.

Marriages and offspring

Albert married Princess Marie (1855–1888), daughter of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia , with whom he had two daughters, on May 6, 1885 in Berlin .

After the death of his first wife, he married on December 13, 1891 in Remplin, Duchess Helene zu Mecklenburg (1857-1936), daughter of Duke Georg zu Mecklenburg and Grand Duchess Katharina Michailowna Romanowa . The second marriage was childless.
