Georg of Mecklenburg (1824–1876)
Georg August Ernst Adolf Karl Ludwig, Duke of Mecklenburg [-Strelitz] (* 11. January 1824 in Neustrelitz , † June 8 . Jul / 20th June 1876 . Greg in Saint Petersburg , buried in Mirow ) was a Russian general and justified the Russian line of the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz .
Live and act
Duke Georg was the fourth child and youngest son of Grand Duke Georg von Mecklenburg-Strelitz and his wife Marie von Hessen-Kassel . Friedrich Wilhelm (1819–1904), later Grand Duke of Mecklenburg (-Strelitz) and Karoline Charlotte Marianne (1821–1876) were his siblings.
In 1851 he married Grand Duchess Katharina Michailowna Romanowa (1827-1894), daughter of Grand Duke Michael Pawlowitsch Romanow and Charlotte von Württemberg and granddaughter of Tsar Paul I, in Saint Petersburg in 1851. At the wedding, he received the estate and Remplin Palace as a family affidavit for himself and his descendants. The couple mostly lived in Saint Petersburg, where they resided in the Mikhailovsky Palace built for Katharina's father .
Georg and Katharina Mikhailovna had five children:
- Nikolaus Georg Michael Carl (* / † July 11, 1854)
- Helene (1857-1936)
- Georg Alexander (1859–1909)
- Marie Friederike Helene (* / † 1861)
- Carl Michael (1863-1934)
Georg's body was transferred to Mecklenburg and buried on June 27, 1876 in the princely crypt of the Mirow church.
In memory of him and his sister Caroline , who died shortly before him on June 1, 1876 , her mother, Grand Duchess Marie, donated the new building of the Remplin church.
