Freital Brewery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Freital Brewery - also Döhlen-Freital Brewery - was a beer brewery in Döhlen , a later district of Freital (today the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district ).

history

Around 1725, the manor brewery was founded in Döhlen, one of the most populous villages in the region . In 1842 the manor brewery became the Döhlen chamber manor brewery . Hermann Gerlach leased it in 1859 and converted it into a family business. When his son took a share in the brewery in 1878, it was renamed Hermann Gerlach & Sohn . Due to technical and structural problems, it was only possible to brew top-fermented beers . Bottom-fermented beers, however, became increasingly popular. The brewery and the storage cellar were therefore rebuilt, in which bottom-fermented beers were also brewed from 1885. From 1889 Oskar Hermann Gerlach became co-owner of the brewery. In 1924 the name was changed to the Hermann Gerlach & Sohn, OHG brewery .

In 1946, after 87 years, the family tradition of the brewery in the GDR came to an end with expropriation and public ownership . It now continued to produce as VEB Brewery Döhlen-Freital and was the first brewery in the Dresden area to brew dark beer again after the war. In 1964 it was incorporated into the VEB Dresdner Breweries as the Freital plant . In 1975 there was another redesign. The brewery was incorporated into the Felsenkeller plant as part of the Freital operation, and in 1978 it was assigned to the Dresden Beverage Combine .

The well-known Schwarzer Steiger black beer was brewed from 1983 .

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , the brewery closed in 1991 because it could not withstand market pressure. From 1989 it had operated again as the Freital Brewery. The Black Steiger was then brewed by Feldschlösschen AG .
