Catherine Mikhailovna Romanova ( Russian Екатерина Михайловна , Yekaterina Mikhailovna * August 16 jul. / 28. August  1827 greg. , † April 30 jul. / 12. May  1894 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian Grand Duchess and by marriage Duchess to Mecklenburg [-Strelitz].

Life

Katharina was born as the third of five daughters of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich of Russia (1798–1849) and Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna in the Moscow Kremlin . Through her father, Elizabeth was the granddaughter of Tsar Paul and niece of Tsars Alexander I and Nicholas I. Elizabeth Mikhailovna Romanova was one of her sisters who all died before her.

On February 4th jul. / February 16,  1851 greg. she married in Saint Petersburg Georg Herzog zu Mecklenburg  [-Strelitz], the younger son of Grand Duke Georg von Mecklenburg-Strelitz and his wife Marie von Hessen-Kassel . The wedding Georg good and got Schloss Remplin as Familienfideikommiss for himself and his descendants. The couple mostly lived in Saint Petersburg, where they resided in the Mikhailovsky Palace built for Katharina's father .

From Remplin, she founded the Katharinenstift in Stavenhagen in 1866 .

Georg and Katharina Mikhailovna had four children:

  • Nikolaus (* † July 11, 1854)
  • Helene (1857-1936)
