Georg Alexander Duke of Mecklenburg, (* 6. June 1859 in Remplin , † November 22 jul. / 5. December  1909 greg. In St. Petersburg ; full name Georg Alexander Michael Friedrich Wilhelm Franz Carl, Duke of Mecklenburg ) was a member of the Russian branch of the Grand Ducal House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Imperial Russian General.

Georg Alexander was the eldest surviving son of Georg zu Mecklenburg and his wife Grand Duchess Katharina Michailowna Romanowa (1827-1894), the daughter of Grand Duke Michael Pawlowitsch Romanow and granddaughter of Tsar Paul I. A first son Nikolaus was born on the day of his birth (11. July 1854) died. His sister Helene (1857–1936) married Albert von Sachsen-Altenburg . Carl Michael (1863–1934) was his youngest brother.

From 1879 to 1881, accompanied by the officer and geographer Alexis von Tillo, he went to Strasbourg and Leipzig to study . At the University of Leipzig he was awarded a Dr. phil is doing his doctorate. After his return, he embarked on a career as an officer in the Russian army, became a colonel in the cavalry regiment of the Guards and finally major general . On February 14, 1890, he married Natalie Vanljarskaja in Saint Petersburg (born May 16, 1858 in Saint Peterburg, † March 14, 1921 in Cannes ), the daughter of the State Councilor Fedor Vanljarski. The marriage was unequal and morganatic ; his wife was raised to Countess Carlow on March 18, 1890 by Grand Duke Friedrich Wilhelm . The children also had this title.

In 1894, Georg Alexander and his siblings inherited their mother's extensive fortune. From this they sold the Mikhailovsky Palace for 5 million rubles to Tsar Nicholas II , who set up the Russian Museum in it.

Georg Alexander was a music lover and composer. In Leipzig he had private lessons with Carl Reinecke , who also dedicated his Serenade op. 242 to him. From 1897 he had his own string quartet in Saint Petersburg under the direction of Boris Kamensky, which he equipped with Guarneri instruments. It achieved great fame and made guest tours through Europe. In Saint Petersburg, as Georg Brandes noted, he was often found in free-thinking circles .

After his death in 1909, his brother Carl Michael was Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich V. of children Catherine (from 1891 to 1940, later married to Vladimir Emmanuelovich Prince guardian Galitzine ), Marie (1893-1979), Natalia (1894-1913) and Georg determined . The family managed to escape from Russia in the turmoil of the revolution.
